Generic domains: Commercial
The .COM extension, established in 1985, was initially overseen by the United States Department of Defense but is now managed by Verisign Inc.
Domain registrations for .COM are facilitated by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and Verisign-accredited registrars. Originally intended for commercial entities, .COM domains are now used for any type of website because they have no restrictions on their usage. Currently, there are approximately 95 million registered .COM domains, as reported by Verisign. This extension experiences a growth of over one million new registrations each month.
